6th grade Action Color Wheels

6th grade Action Color Wheels

To complete this lesson students used an action figure found in a magazine. The student then cut the figure out, using skilled craftsmanship and traced the figure 12 times on to white paper. They then used tempra paint to paint the figures. The figures were then overlapped and glued to black paper.

8th grade 2 point perspective / surreal cityscape

8th grade 2 Point Perspective / Sureal Cityscape

The 8th grade artists created Surreal Cityscapes using 2 point perspective. The students used their knowledge of one point perspective from their 7 grade class to build the artwork.

Requirements:

  • minimum of 4 buildings
  • 2 Windows and 1 door on each building
  • 1 surreal element to the artwork
  • Hatching and cross hatching

7th grade 1 Point Perspective

7th Grade 1 Point Perspective (Birds Eye View)

7th grade students learned about 1 point perspective creating a birds eye view of a city. To begin the project the 7th graders competed a sketch, using ideas from a reference folder that I provided for them. The students were required to show that all buildings were converging to one vanishing point. The buildings were given windows, doors and details to complete the artwork. All student artwork was colored using colored pencil.

6th grade Newsweek Hero Project

6th grade Newsweek Hero Project
I adapted this lesson from a workshop I attended. Tricia Fugelstad led the workshop. Her website offers a wealth of information and great ideas. Please check out her blog to get great ideas for using iPads/ technology in your classroom.

Fegely Heroes
We began with brainstorming a list of characteristics that super heroes and real- life heroes posses. We used the worksheet below; however, just writing on the board will also work.
We then used the template to plan our design. Students submitted their plan/ rough draft to me before beginning, this way I could check for grammatical errors, spelling and complete sentences.
To create this project we used our classroom set of iPads and the apps: Dropbox, ArtStudio, and PicCollage. This was a lot of work for my 6th grade students, especially for our first iPad projectof the school year. The excitement of the 6th grade got us through the project relatively fast. We were able to complete this project in 5 days.
To make it easier down the road I took all of my students pictures in front of our class made green screen (a picked a really bright green shower curtain) this way it was not so expensive and a color most students wouldn't wear. The students selected some super hero costumes, clothing, masks, capes, ect. to wear for their photograph.
To begin I uploaded the student photo and the template below into our classdropbox. This allowed all students access to materials.
The students began by importing their photo into the app ArtStudio. Using the lasso tool the students deleated all of the green screen from their background. They needed to do this without cutting off any of their body parts.
The students then exported their projects from ArtStudio and saved them to the camera roll.
The next app we worked in was PicCollage. PicCollage allows the student to layer the Newsweek template, their picture, and their words onto the page.
Upon completion the students submitted and saved their finished project to DropBox.

Texture Discovery

7th Grade Texture Discovery

The Fegely 7th graders explored the elementsof art texture. The students were introduced to texture through the use of a PowerPoint presentation with guided notes.

To hook the students into the lesson we conducted a texture discovery.

Before the students arrived, I placed 20 paper bags around the classroom with different textured objects in each bag.

The students were paired up into groups of two and were given a teacher made worksheet. The worksheet asks the students to describe the way the object feels and also to guess what they believe the object is inside of the bag without looking at the object.

8th grade Graffiti Art

8th Grade Graffiti Art

8th grade artists used their knowledge of balance (symmetrical/ asymmetrical/ and radial) and objective vs. nonobjective art to create their artwork.

I usually do this lesson at the beginning of the semester or school year. It helps me to learn my students names and helps me access their current ability level.

The students artwork is graded with a rubric and the students complete a self-assessment.

6th grade Time Lapse Experiment

6th grade Time Lapse Experiment

Using the app iMotion we experimented with the time lapse option. This is our 6th grade class from start to finish. It gets a little crazy to watch! We are excited to use the time lapse app in class this year to make videos demonstrating our classroom knowledge of the arts!

7th grade Name Tangle

7th grade Name Tangle

Objective: Students understand the characteristics of a line.

Students will create their name using different characteristics of a line.

Students will understand and apply patterns to their artwork.

Vocabulary: line, line quality, line characteristics, patter, media, and medium.

Directions: Students stretched their names across the paper (6x12), using pencil first to create the sketch. In all of the negative space, the areas outside of the name the students filled with patterns.

The name was then colored in dark and completely with sharpie and all patterns were outlined with a thin point sharpie.
