Art Criticism

Art Criticism: Looking at Art

The ability to Describe, analyze, interpret, judge and evaluate a work of art is known as the critiquing process. This process can be just as important in art education as creating a work of art.
7the grade Fegely students spent a week learning the process of critiquing artwork.
To complete the process the students used the handouts below.

Students worked in small groups to complete each step.

Each group was given a Japaneese print to critique. This went along with our Unit on Japan.
Later in the week the students applied their knowledge to conduct a peer critique.

Texture Dragons

Texture Dragons

These 6th grade dragons were an easy and fun three day project! All students finished and were sucessful creating their work of art!

The students began the project drawing a dragon. The students used their imagination to come up with their unique dragon design.
Next the student used texture plates and crayons to fill the dragon with different textures. I required the students to have a minimum of four different textures inside of the dragon.
The students then outlines the dragon in sharpie and cut the dragon out.
The finished project resulted in the dragon glued onto colored construction paper as seen below.

Fall into Art

Fall into Art

7th and 8th graders created fall inspired works of art
8th graders drew from a fall inspired still-life. The students then painted the still-life using liquid water colors. The students were instructed to paint with lots of color, creating many values in their paintings. Once completed with the painting g process the students used a sharpie to outline the multiple values found in the painting.
7th grade completed a similar project using a variety of leaves as their study.

8th grade Texture Birds

While studying the element of art, texture, the 8th grade artists created texture birds using chalk and oil pastels. The students sketched and drew birds from reference folders provided for their tables.

For 8th graders chalk pastels can sometimes be a challenging medium to master; however, the students succeeded with flying colors!

6th grade Action Color Wheels

To complete this lesson students used an action figure found in a magazine. The student then cut the figure out, using skilled craftsmanship and traced the figure 12 times on to white paper. They then used tempra paint to paint the figures. The figures were then overlapped and glued to black paper.

8th grade 2 point perspective / surreal cityscape

8th grade 2 Point Perspective / Sureal Cityscape

The 8th grade artists created Surreal Cityscapes using 2 point perspective. The students used their knowledge of one point perspective from their 7 grade class to build the artwork.

Requirements:

  • minimum of 4 buildings
  • 2 Windows and 1 door on each building
  • 1 surreal element to the artwork
  • Hatching and cross hatching

7th grade 1 Point Perspective

7th Grade 1 Point Perspective (Birds Eye View)

7th grade students learned about 1 point perspective creating a birds eye view of a city. To begin the project the 7th graders competed a sketch, using ideas from a reference folder that I provided for them. The students were required to show that all buildings were converging to one vanishing point. The buildings were given windows, doors and details to complete the artwork. All student artwork was colored using colored pencil.
